Cocktail bar in Birmingham

The "Bacchus Bar" in Birmingham, England, is an extraordinary cocktail bar and pub that is part of the renowned Nicholson's chain, known for its historic buildings and unique character. Centrally located in the city, it is a hidden gem that delights visitors with its unusual atmosphere and rich selection of drinks and food. Situated in a vaulted cellar beneath a shopping arcade, it is just a few minutes' walk from major transport hubs, making it easily accessible. The bar has earned a reputation as one of the best places for craft beer and traditional pub cuisine in Birmingham, attracting a mix of locals, tourists, and business travelers.

Best craft beer bar Birmingham

The interior of the "Bacchus Bar" is an experience in itself. As soon as you descend the stairs, you enter a world reminiscent of bygone eras. The decor is an eclectic mix of various styles: Roman mosaics, medieval stone arches, Egyptian murals, and Georgian library vibes create an atmosphere akin to a time travel. The bar features several themed rooms, including an Egyptian room adorned with hieroglyphics and pharaonic heads, as well as a French-inspired dining room that can be rented for private events. Dark wood, wrought-iron details, and ornate oil paintings enhance the impression of decadent splendor. The lighting is dimmed, giving the bar an intimate and mysterious touch, while the open layout still fosters a sociable atmosphere.

Traditional British pub dishes

Culinary-wise, the "Bacchus Bar" offers a selection of traditional British pub dishes crafted with care. The Steak and Ale Pie is particularly popular, a hearty pie filled with tender beef in a rich beer sauce, served with creamy mashed potatoes and vegetables – a dish that represents British cuisine at its finest. The Sunday Roast is also frequently praised, featuring juicy meat, fluffy Yorkshire puddings, and a generous portion of gravy that makes Sundays a special experience. The kitchen emphasizes fresh ingredients and also offers lighter options such as sandwiches or fish dishes, which are considered house specialties.

Historic bar with unique character

The drinks selection is another highlight of the "Bacchus Bar." It is especially known for its extensive collection of real ales, which change regularly and often come from local breweries. Craft beer enthusiasts will find plenty to enjoy here, as will fans of premium gins, offered in various varieties. While the cocktail menu is not the main focus, it includes creative drinks that enhance the experience – such as fruity or spicy creations that complement the food. The bar also boasts an impressive wine selection that underscores the historical character of the place, as well as non-alcoholic options for those who prefer not to drink alcohol.

Cozy bar for group celebrations

Service is a central part of the experience. The staff is often praised for their friendliness and competence, whether recommending a beer or assisting during meals. Orders are placed at the bar, but food is served at the table, making the process efficient and straightforward. During peak times, such as the annual Christmas market, it can get very crowded, yet most guests appreciate the lively atmosphere as part of the charm. The "Bacchus Bar" is wheelchair accessible and has space for groups, making it popular for celebrations or meetings.

Great pub, very quirky and different, but well with a visit, especially being so close to New Street/Grand Central. Brilliant selection of draught beers too.

Always a fantastic atmosphere, although first time having food here and it did not disappoint! Izzy was one of the best waitresses we’ve ever had - so bubbly and just an all round champion. Large glasses of the Shiraz was around £11, the Nicholsons Burger (best I’ve had admittedly for many a year) was £18.50 - and worth it! Booked in advance, although definitely a few tables for walk-ins I’d say. Overall, I love this place and it’s awesome Victoria-esque style.

Decent Nicholson's pub a couple of minutes walk from Birmingham New Street Station. Seven cask beers on handpump when I visited all of which were pale ales. I will not be visiting this pub again until I can be sure that it will be offering a selection of beer styles.

We visited with our dog. I booked a table however for what ever reason we were not able to book for the dining room but the staff saved a table for us in the bar area. The staff on were fabulous. The didn't just accept or tolerate our dog the went out of the way to welcome him. Fetching water and fussing him. Embarassingly our dog was sick. We asked for some equipment which we could clean up with but they wouldn't hear of it and insisted on clearing it up for us. All the staff that night were personable and friendly they behaved as if nothing was too much trouble. We would gladly recommend The Baccus Bar to our friends and will definitely make a return visit.
